Last fall, a new food shop opened in the Warehouse District in Minneapolis:
Local D'Lish. As the name implies, the shop's focus is delicious, local food. To that end, they stock foods from Minnesota and Midwest sources, everything from meat and eggs to cheese to pasta and pasta sauce and baked goods. And chocolates--oh, my, yes, they have chocolates.
They also fill a gap in the winter season by hosting a monthly Winter Farmers Market. The shop brings in vendors from the Mill City Farmers Market.
It's a small space, and very lively when those of us who miss our summer market come to visit.
I was especially happy to see these folks again:
Aunt Else's Aebleskiver. A Danish pastry described as being a cross between a pancake and a popover. For the knitters in my reading audience, look closely at the implement she's using to turn the pastry. Yup--it's a knitting needle. No, it's not out of desperation--that's actually the recommended tool for the job.
If you're wondering what happens at D'Lish in the summer, when the farmers go back to the Mill City Market, the proprietor of D'Lish has that covered: the farmers' kids will be running their own market in the shop, complete with kid cooking classes and other events.
So now I have two farmers markets to visit.
But if only next winter, D'Lish could coax Francisco to bring his amazing pico de gallo into the city in the winter...
