You're in the acknowledgements! Lovely. How can I not be interested in a book whose author plaigirized Anne of Green Gables as a child and reported from Russia? I remember writing a piece about loving classical music for the junior high school newspaper. It wouldn't have been controversial any other year but ... The Beatles had just begun to hit, and the piece made me pariah for years!

I'm in!

thanks for the [soapbox] comments. thanks for saying what i couldn't say.

I sort of "fell into" writing and journalism as a career, and despite the sometimes too-interesting challenges of a down economy and confusions of "new media," I love it.

As far as the piece that I "wish I had".... I'd love the addition of being an internet TV show host -- producing/hosting a regular program that's streamed online. This is actually something I'm working on, so stay tuned.... I think it would help if I staked out a deadline, though. ;)

Years ago, I had a job scooping ice cream. It was a fun job, and I had the opportunity to taste all kinds of new flavors---until I was fired. Fired for over-scooping. I thought that people should get a generous scoop, and I had never been told what that meant. So, now, whenever I go to an ice cream store, I appreciate the scooper---whether or not I get an over-sized portion!

Great review, thanks.

Although I have always been a writer, I fell into editing. However the best job I fell into originally had no writing or editing involvement, and was thanks to my Biology minor and a friend's dad. He gave me the heads up that my local gov't agriculture agency was hiring for bug inspectors and I was asked to interview when I called about the job. I luckily went down early and read all the brochures in the waiting area -- gypsy moth was the bug of problem at the time so there were questions on it that I answered thanks to those brochures!! I had the job for two years total, and it was so much fun.

I love reading memoirs, and have never read one about a journalist. This looks like a great read.

Nice interview! I've fallen into all sorts of jobs. Actually, most of them -- and surprisingly few are worth talking about. I did fall into being a caterer at one point, and although I'm glad I'm out of it now, I sure did learn a lot at the time.

Sounds like a good book!

I was in my 3rd year of law school wondering what I was going to do for a job! I knew what kind of law I didn't want to practice but I wasn't so sure what kind of lawyer I wanted to be. I signed up for a Trial Advocacy class which, it turned out, was being taught by the DA of the Kings County District Attorney's Office, Brooklyn. One day in class the DA was demonstrating how to cross-examine a winess. I was confused by what he was doing because his actions didn't coincide with the notes he'd given us in the prior class about how to cross-examine a witness. I raised my hand and asked him about it. It turns out that I had it right and the DA was improperly cross-examining his witness! lol His face turned bright red!
A month later, I was on the elevator on my way to my Trial Ad class. The doors opened and the Brooklyn DA got on, said hello to me and walked to the back of the elevator. When we got to the floor our class was on and the elevator doors opened, the DA stopped me as I was getting off, looked at me & asked "Would you like to work for me, Amy?" I stuttered a bit ultimately telling him yes I would. He said "Great, send me your resume & we'll set up an appointment for you to come in and firm up the details.". That's how I became a prosecutor in the Brooklyn DA's Office!

Thank you for this great giveaway!

I fell into teaching during college, when my roommate pointed out an ad to earn $15/hour. I wound up teaching grammar and math for standardized test prep, and taught on and off over the years.

Not *exactly* a job, but when I was in college I answered an ad for a housemate and that is how I met my husband.
