Or, a meal with a view.
Inside.
Now, how's that for a dining room?
This eye candy is courtesy of Naniboujou Lodge, just north of Grand Marais. It's a historic inn, with quite the past; it was begun in 1927, when a bunch of prominent (and wealthy) businessmen came up with the idea of building a highly exclusive lodge on Lake Superior's North Shore, a resort where membership would be decided by vote (and only two votes were needed to block someone). Initial charter members were to include Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, and Ring Lardner.
Opening day was in July 1929. I bet that tells you everything you need to know about the fortunes of the Lodge following the opening. As many of the founding members lost their wealth in the months following October 1929, the Lodge nearly fell into foreclosure and was finally, a few years later, turned into a more traditional--and far less exclusive--resort.
Today Naniboujou is open May-October, with some additional dates around Christmas and New Year's. Its lushly decorated dining room, decorated with Cree Indian illustrations, is a major draw to guests and diners alike.
I had the pleasure of dining there last summer. I felt a bit underdressed; it's a gorgeous room, tables set with cloth and heavy cutlery. But nearly everyone else there was dressed for the outdoors as well. Maybe people dress for dinner? At lunch, it was very casual. Being a hot day, I opted for the restaurant's signature chicken salad, which was nicely portioned and flavored. It wasn't extraordinary, but well worth the visit, and I'd go back.
But next time, I'd end my visit with a stop at the beach.

Oh wow. Both views are fantastic - the ceiling on that room! Fabulous!
Hmm. What could possibly have happened after July 1929? A colorful reminder that our fortunes can change in a moment, eh?

While the dining room ceiling alone makes the trip look worthwhile, it's the beach shot that's really enticing to me. It looks so peaceful. You live in a beautiful state, Amy. Thanks for always pointing out the good spots to visit.
