Before we commence with the food pictorial, I must say: I'm in mourning.
It's the Friday of Labor Day weekend, and all the little farm stands that sell the world's best corn on the cob have already closed for the season. This is a catastrophe. I don't buy corn at stores. I buy it at farm stands. I'm a lifetime corn snob. And now there's none. I'm too late for a Labor Day corn feed. Sigh.
Well, for those of you have still have farm stands open or who (heretics) buy your corn at the grocery store, here's today's Friday food.
This week I've experimented with different ways to flavor corn on the cob. Can you guess what's on the above cob?
Bacon grease.
Oh, don't wrinkle your nose and act all disgusted (except for the vegetarians in the crowd--I'll excuse your dismay). This is very, very tasty. Messy, greasy, drippy, yes--and delicious.
Then there's this possibility:
Fresh lime juice, chili powder, and sour cream. Who knew?
I didn't. So you see I was cautious at first run, just seasoning a tip of the corn. But after one bite, I doused the whole cob in these three fine, fine ingredients. Oh so tasty.
But when it comes right down to it, it's hard to beat the basics:
Good ol' butter. Yum. Again with the drippiness and the messiness, and again with the who-cares-iness.
Happy Labor Day, everyone--hope you still have local corn to eat.

Here's another condiment to try on corn: umeboshi paste - Japanese pickled plum paste. Sweet, salty, yum!

Mmm, I think I have to try the lime and chili idea! And I might need a margarita afterwards.... ;)

Oh, corn! I'm a traditionalist that loves the drippy butter with a lot of sea salt and a bit of pepper. My DH likes butter with either Emeril's seasoning or Tony Chachere's creole seasoning. Yummy photos...and the Butter Boy? I have to find one.

Ooh... I'm so hungry... :)

We didn't get any good corn this year, even at the farm stands. Hubby doesn't understand about not buying corn at grocery stores. Heathen.

Corn Caliente! Great Idea!

That all looks great! I too am a corn snob - growing up in the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant and having the corn fresh from the field available right in town! We would make a meal of just corn and butter! The dry weather made everything mature much faster. Our oak tree at the back of the house lost all of it's acorns last month already before all the rains came. I was not impressed with any corn stand corn I ate this year though.

I'm mourning the loss of so much of our wonderful local produce after the floods. My CSA had to get rid of a lot of workers and stop deliveries for a couple of weeks. They'll resume again next week, but no more corn, no more tomatoes, no more potatoes. No more melons. All of my favorites!

Oh my that looks good! I have got to stop by earlier on Fridays.
Hmm. I bet Brentwood still has heck of corn (home of the Cornfest). Maybe I'll trot out there tomorrow, I even have bacon grease.

A 'butter boy'? THAT looks like a cool contraption! If we have leftovers, I do like the corn on the cob cold, dipped in ume plum vinegar.

Bacon grease on corn?! That sounds sooooooo good! I would have never thought of it. Of course I think this means that I would have to by *real* bacon, not the microwave kind in order to get the grease.....mmmmmm, bacon grease pancakes....I gotta stop!

I have all three of those items, plus some corn on the cob, in my fridge/cupboard right now! Guess I know what I'll be eating for dinner tonight. Thanks!

Corn in the summer is the best thing. We've got all white now, they call it Silver Queen and it's my favorite.

A friend made corn with bacon wrapped around it which was okay. We love and this is indulgent with grated parmesan cheese on it. Another one we love is I make an herbed garlic butter and use that.
I love corn!

Although, I will say that one of my co-workers absolutely swears by the corn at Wegman's markets, says it's better than any of the farmstands near her. So, I suppose that not ALL supermarket corn is disappointing....

Mmm . . . now I'm wishing I'd stopped at the local farm at lunch and bought some corn! (Because yes, sorry, they're still open and selling....)

Mmmm, you're making me want corn. We've been doing the lime & chile thing for awhile, but haven't tried it with sour cream. Haven't done the bacon grease thing, either, although when I make fried corn that's what I use. Yum.

Closed already???? Is corn all they sold? I'm hoping mine doesn't close til after pumpkin season. Of course how long the corn will last I have no clue.
I'm with you though. Now that I've had the farm stand stuff, I can't eat it from the store. Blech!
