Bloomin' art

Every year, the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts has a big spring deal called Art in Bloom. Florists come in, find a piece of artwork, get inspired, and create a floral piece based on that artwork. This is a nice concept, a welcome-to-spring, although it should be noted that visitors with spring allergies might want to up the dosage of Claritin before visiting.

Apparently a completely free hand is given to the floral designers. That seems fair and in keeping with the spirit of artistry.

I thought this was a thoughtful interpretation.

Storm, fire, war. Very intense.

And this is just lovely.

Artinbloom2

I love the colors, the shapes, everything about it. Very creative and inspired.

However.

Artinbloom3

Um. No. Just--no.

At my funeral, given a choice between the mummy and the flowers, please display the mummy.

And finally, there's this:

Artinbloom4

From a distance, looks like a reasonable reimagining. But wait--look closer--what's that in the flowers?

Artinbloom5

A Barbie doll. Because, yeah, nothing says "fine art" like Barbie. One has to wonder how the artist of the painting would feel about having their work reduced to Barbie in the bushes. And the plastic seashells.

Thank goodness it's not part of the permanent collection.

Barbie-in-the-bush! HA. That's pretty funny all by itself. And who can possiby be creative if they can't "take a joke." Thanks for the photos. (I wonder what the flowers would look like for Munch's Scream?!)

That mummy arrangement is just plain downright weird!

Baaaaarbieeeee. It hurts.

Not sure how I feel about these really ... sort of like art class where they ask the kids to paint in the style of ___ and what they produce is, well, uncertain. Hmm. I think I would have to see it in person to get the true effect of it (like most art, really).

What a clever idea! I kind of like the mummy representation flowers. Not so much the Barbie. And my allergies hates them all.

Egyptian mummy meets Dia de los Muertos!

I love the mummy floral. Eye of the beholder and all that! fun post

The first two florists really got it, but the last two - can you imagine what they'd do for a wedding? I shudder to think. Ouch.

Is that the Little Mermutt in the last arrangement?

I'm sneezing just looking at the flowers!

Personally, I think that last painting deserves Barbie and plastic seashells. I totally agree with you on the mummy and its arrangement.

I'm reminded of "My Kid Could Paint That".

A couple of those designers look like they've flipped out at last.

Oh, but it would look perfect in your foyer, don't you think? Classy!

Hee hee you said Barbie in the bushes....

Oh, I love the second one! It totally captures the feel of the painting.
