Sometimes I have problems with approaching books with my expectations set too high. In this case, it was the opposite. Several Sandman fans warned me that this one isn't that good, but I needed to read it and get to the end so I could move on to the better volumes. Fine. I could do that, especially since youngest son gave it to me for Christmas.
Funny thing is, I really liked it. The story of the mysterious Sandman trying to rekindle his power while facing some daunting adversaries hooked me. Sure, Sandman looks a lot like Neil Gaiman, which raises questions of Mary Sue, but there's also a version of Satan that looks a lot like 1970s David Bowie.
It's a very dark tale, and that's something I can enjoy. The artwork is gorgeous, colorful and detailed. So now the question is: how low should I set my expectations for volume 2?
